The Dance Team is a student-run organization at California Lutheran University. We offer open practices to those who love to dance, as well as a competitive outlet through our Competition Team. We strive to learn from each other and to have fun dancing. Currently, the Competition Team consists of 16 wonderful young women, who range in experience from tap to contemporary to hip-hop. Together, we form a team that loves and appreciates the art and sport of dance.
Competition Team
The Competition Team is an audition-only, competitive dance team. Team members are required to be full-time CLU undergraduate students. The full season for our team runs from August through late April, with auditions occurring in May. The Competition Team competes with other nationally ranked College Dance Teams at the USA Collegiate Championships in Anaheim, CA as well as smaller, local dance competitions and events.
Schedule and Commitment
Practice is held three to four days per week with additional practices prior to competition season. Added conditioning and workout hours are also required. We encourage all of our team members to focus on their academics while still exercising good time management. When auditioning and upon making the team, dancers are required to disclose all activities they participate in on and off campus (ie: job, class schedule, other clubs or sports, etc.) Our dancers must be committed, but it's very manageable. We have had dancers on the team take over 18 units, hold a part-time job, commute from off-campus, and maintain a very active social life. It's very possible to be on the team and still experience all that college offers! The CLU Dance Team is a rewarding and fun experience that you do not want to miss out on!
Our current schedule
Sundays 3:00 - 6:00 PM
Mondays 8:00-10:00 PM
Thursdays 8:00-10:00 PM
Open Practices and Performances
On various Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays we often hold practice that is open to the CLU student body. During this open class, students will be able to learn and improve upon technique, flexibility, style, and strength. Classes start off with a cardio warmup, stretching, and muscle conditioning. Short dance combinations will be taught by Competition Team Members or guest teachers. Open Practices are open to all, no previous dance experience needed!
Other information about Open Practices and Performances will be posted on our Instagram.
